North Carolina storm recovery bill: How to claim

Tens of thousands of property owners would see tax relief as a result of the House of Representatives passing the “Build Back Better” bill.

The measure would offer up to $40,000 (£26,000) to homeowners who rebuild with a mortgage and have had problems securing the funds to do so.

Congress is the final legislative hurdle for the bill. It’s still uncertain whether it will make it to President Donald Trump’s desk.

In some cases, homeowners are struggling to rebuild because they are not covered by insurance.

The problem is frequently compounded by a demand for updated home designs, which can add tens of thousands of dollars to the cost of repairs.

How to claim

If you were approved for low-interest mortgages through the National Flood Insurance Program, your lender must issue a written Declaration of Preliminary Qualifications.

For other mortgages, you can show damage to the property and emergency maintenance costs.

Individual borrowers may be eligible for the relief provided under the bill if they did not default on any previous mortgage loan.
