One Israeli and one Palestinian was killed and four others injured after a shooting attack in Jerusalem on Friday. The gunman was shot dead, and Israeli authorities say the shooting occurred after four teenagers took a selfie with him and decided to follow him to Tel Aviv.

One of the injured youths is said to be 17 years old, and all four were rushed to hospital, with police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld saying that a 14-year-old girl suffered serious wounds to her abdomen.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later told reporters that the suspected attacker had been killed by police.

According to initial reports, the suspect was an illegal Palestinian worker and was on his way back to Ramallah after collecting a paycheck when he was stopped for routine identity checks. While searching his bag, police discovered what they called “inhuman items,” including scissors, a knife, and one Molotov cocktail. After being detained, he apparently sought out his victims outside a cafe and began shooting indiscriminately with a semiautomatic weapon, eventually killing one of them.

While the shooter is said to have targeted the occupants of the cafe, the victims of the attack also included Israeli security personnel deployed to assist an Israeli soldier wounded in a terror attack.

Israel has been on high alert in response to what many fear are incursions of Palestinians on the Israeli side of the border. According to a new report by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, more than 2,000 attacks on Israelis were recorded in 2017, including stabbings, and more than 160 Palestinians were killed in Israel and the Palestinian territories during the same period.

On Thursday, Palestine Liberation Organization leader Mahmoud Abbas called on Hamas to put an end to its armed attacks in the West Bank and warned that a peace deal with Israel was “not an impossibility.” He made the statement after Israeli officials announced plans to close the Palestinian Authority’s tax offices, accusing the PLO of owing back taxes and levies. According to the Palestinian group, Israel is collecting taxes on behalf of the Palestinians because Gaza has not officially joined the international payments network known as the Bank of Palestine system.
